One year and one week on and finally the Cowboys have the chance for some serious redemption for that awful night in the 2011 finals against Manly.
No one at Cowboys HQ will forget that elimination final – the game we’ve avoided talking about in this column, until now.
On that night, North Queensland played their best half of football for 2011 in the first 40 minutes to lead 8-0 at the break; in the second half, they had their worst 40 minutes of the season and ended up losing 42-8.
They didn’t get a set in possession for the final 10 minutes as a ruthless Manly raced in four tries.
The post-match dressing room was dead quiet for several minutes as the Cowboys tried to take in what had just happened.
They were significant underdogs on that occasion and coach Neil Henry admitted this week that they limped into the finals and went to Sydney hoping to win more than expecting to win.
In 2012, the momentum is all positive for the Cowboys.
They’re on their longest winning streak of the season, have knocked over arch-rivals Brisbane, and the big guns – Thurston, Bowen, Tate, Scott and Tamou – are injury-free and in excellent form.
This is an imposing North Queensland outfit and just about everyone who follows the NRL realises that now.
Their premiership odds have tumbled in from $13 to $6 in a week and some bookies have them as slight favourities against the Sea Eagles, who are coming off a physical battle against Canterbury last weekend.
Although the reigning premiers have lost centre Steve Matai to suspension and have co-captain Jamie Lyon in doubt with a calf injury, there’s plenty of other attacking options that the Cowboys will need to keep a close watch on.
Cherry-Evans and Foran are arguably the best halves duo in the competition, while the back-row of Watmough, Williams and Glenn Stewart is full of punch and will give the edge defence some headaches.
But perhaps the best tussle of all, although they won’t come close to each other, will be the duel between the two No.1s – Matthew Bowen against Brett Stewart.
Whoever has the best game of these two may be the deciding factor and it’s very hard to go against Mango with the form he’s been in this season.
The only worry for the Cowboys is whether Aaron Payne is fit to take his place, although the very capable Anthony Mitchell is on standby.
No matter what happens, enjoy having your team as part of the final six and cheer as loudly as you can, wherever you are!
