The Chiefs rather limped into the playoffs, if a 12-4 season can be said to end that way. While both their closing losses were narrow and each contained a hotly-debated try awarded to the opposition after TMO reviews, the inescapable fact is that they were both losses and, as a result, first place on the ladder slipped from the Chiefs grasp. The Chiefs looked very good in patches of each game but struggled in the set pieces, especially against the Crusaders, which prevented them getting any roll on. They remain dangerous, of course, and there are any number of potential match-winners in the team. The week off will have allowed everyone to draw a bead on the issues and really get stuck into them, so there will be no excuses this Friday night.

The Crusaders had few problems with the Bulls in the elimination match last week, as the visitors never threatened to boss the match at any stage and the end result had all the inevitability of Bradley Wiggins’ Tour de France win – it was obvious who was in charge from a long way out. The Bulls might have scored two tries to one, but any team that gives Daniel Carter nine shots at goal as well as a dropped goal chance is going to need a lot more than two tries. The Crusaders were superior in every department and, from 1 to 15, outplayed their individual opponents. The seven-time champions were never stretched and, to complete a good weekend, got this match instead of one in Cape Town as a bonus.

The Crusaders did what they had to do a week back, beating the Force to secure fourth place. That was the best they could do in the competition, and there was little doubt they would achieve that goal. Aided by a couple of debatable TMO calls, they got off to a flying start and the match was decided by halftime when the Crusaders led 32-3. The performance fell away in the second spell without Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter on the field – both were replaced at halftime – but it was obvious that if Blackadder needed them for longer they would have stayed out there until the task was completed. So far the Crusaders have not rediscovered that overwhelming form from just prior to the break, but they were efficient enough in getting their last two wins.

After losing three in a row before the break and getting solidly thumped by the Sharks, Pretoria’s finest ground through the first half against the lowly Lions to go into the sheds at 20-20. That, however, was as close as the Lions got; the Bulls slowly moved away and, despite not needing it to qualify, they picked up a bonus point as well. Despite the win there was little compelling evidence that the Bulls have hit the playoffs running. They have not beaten a fellow contender since round 7, and if you take out the first hour against the Cheetahs, they have not dominated anyone in a couple of months. Throw the travel in, and the Bulls have a battle on their hands.

If anyone wondered how the Crusaders would rebound from that shock defeat at Melbourne, they got their answer in spades a week later as they set a new margin record by any team against the Blues in the process of pounding their hapless opponents. The Blues may have been dreadful, but there was cause and effect to consider, and a lot of their problems stemmed from a clinical performance by the home side. Some of the team tries were outstanding, and the forwards completely dominated proceedings. It was a good way for the Crusaders to respond, but tougher things await this week.

The Highlanders have won two important matches in the last fortnight, getting up over the Bulls in a rugged encounter before taking maximum points at Eden Park. The scoreline was not as impressive as the Crusaders managed, but the Blues were far more competitive and the Highlanders had run the score out to 27-6 before a late Blues surge narrowed it up. That victory, which enabled the Highlanders to match the team record for wins in a season, provided yet another example of how the southerners can win the close ones; eight of their nine wins have come in matches decided by seven points or less, but only one defeat has seen them collect a consolation point.
