Former VFL defenders Jack Frost and Sam Dwyer, the latter upgraded from the rookie list on Thursday afternoon just in time to ensure his eligibility, were named on the Magpies’ extended interchange bench, as was 21-year-old Queenslander Josh Thomas.

The only clubs to rival Collingwood for potential debutants are Melbourne and Port Adelaide, which face each other on Sunday. The Demons’ top two draft picks of last year, Jack Viney and Jimmy Toumpas, will definitely debut, while mature-age recruits Dean Terlich and Matt Jones could join them after being named on the extended bench. Speedy forward Jake Neade will debut for Port and could be joined by Ollie Wines, its top pick last year, and recently upgraded rookie Kane Mitchell. Melbourne decided not to risk co-captain Jack Trengove (foot) and key-forward recruit Chris Dawes (hamstring).

Western Bulldogs defender Dale Morris is set to play his first premiership match in over a year after being named to face Brisbane Lions on Saturday. He will be joined by 29-year-old VFL recruit Brett Goodes, who will debut, and three midfielders snared from rival clubs: Tom Young, Nick Lower and Koby Stevens.

Brisbane, facing higher expectations because of its NAB Cup triumph, has not selected any debutants but has included former Demons Brent Moloney and Stefan Martin.

St Kilda chose a settled line-up for its match away to Gold Coast on Sunday. Its only new players are defender Dylan Roberton and ruckman Tom Hickey. The Suns chose new arrivals Tom Murphy and Greg Broughton and also promising midfielder Jaeger O’Meara, who has only just become eligible to play after joining the club in late 2011.

Last year’s No. 1 draft pick, Lachie Whitfield, will debut on Saturday night for Greater Western Sydney against the Swans. The Victorian will be joined by Lachie Plowman, an 18-year-old from Macedon.

SUMMARY: The Demons and the Power will be desperate to start their 2013 campaigns on a positive note when they clash at the MCG on Sunday afternoon. Melbourne can ill-afford to start this season, as they began the last, when they fell to the Brisbane Lions by 41 points. Melbourne however proposes an interesting first-up challenge for the Power – simply for being in much the same position. Both teams finished bottom 10 last year, and both have recruited heavily during this off-season with a view to clawing their way back up the ladder.

Playing on the MCG is a rare opportunity for Port, but one that it has struggled to win when playing Melbourne. In fact, Port has only beaten the Demons at the MCG once (Round 6, 2007) since joining the AFL.

First round matches are always a hard slog as well when played between evenly matched teams. Selection for both sides, and the health of its best 22 on Thursday, will significantly play into the outcome of the match.

THE SIX POINTS
1. Port Adelaide has won three of its past four clashes against Melbourne and the Power have been victorious in seven of their past 10 contests since 2007.

2. This will be the 26th clash between the sides, with Port Adelaide holding a narrow advantage in winning 14 games to Melbourne’s 11.

3. Melbourne has not won a round-one game since 2005, when it defeated Essendon by 46 points. The club has lost its past six opening matches (including a draw) by an average of 45 points.

4. The Demons have a favourable record in games played against the Power at the MCG, winning seven of their eight meetings. Port Adelaide’s lone win at the venue came in 2007.

5. Both teams struggled in their attacking efforts last year, with both Melbourne and Port Adelaide ranked 15th and 16th respectively in the competition for inside 50s.

6. However, Melbourne excelled in the contested marking area in 2012, ranking second in the competition, while Port Adelaide struggled, coming in at 16th.

St Kilda head into the match as heavy favourites, but a Gold Coast upset wouldn’t be a surprise.

WALKING WOUNDED: Gold Coast’s main injury concern surrounds key defender Nathan Bock, who is still a few weeks away as he continues his recovery from a broken leg. GWS Giants coach Kevin Sheedy has taken steps to address his side’s defensive woes with two of today’s three debutants set to play in the back half.

Former Hawthorn premiership player Stephen Gilham will add much-needed experience to the line-up and top-three draft pick Lachie Plowman plenty of talent.

“There’s going to be some nerves and some big moments in the game and I just want to keep the guys calm and collected,” Gilham said. “There’s a lot of experience there now and they will give great direction.”

Plowman hasn’t put a foot wrong in the pre-season and was among the Giants’ best in their 24-point win over St Kilda in their final NAB Cup match.

“I’m a little bit nervous because it’s my first game but there’s excitement in it as well,” Plowman said.

“There’s a big jump between the TAC Cup and the AFL so the NAB Cup has been important.”

Gilham, who lives with Plowman, believes the teenager has a great chance to make his mark at the Giants in his first season and has been impressed by his work rate and temperament.

“He’s been one of those players who has done everything this pre-season so he gives himself a chance at a playing not only tonight but for the rest of the season,” Gilham said.

No.1 draft pick Lachie Whitfield could have his hands full when he starts his career on the wing against the fastest man in the league, Lewis Jetta.

“I don’t think I could keep up with him (Jetta), I don’t think anyone can,” Whitfield said.

“It’s been a long time waiting; ever since I was young this has been the dream.

“I’m really excited; a little bit nervous but I can’t wait to get out of there.”

Like Plowman, Whitfield has had an outstanding NAB Cup and has handled the dramatic step up in standard.

“It’s helped me come to terms with the extra pressure and bigger bodies,” Whitfield said.

“We’re in pretty good form over the NAB Cup and we are very confident and even though they are the reigning champs we may catch them off guard.

“Having the underdog status is fine by us.”

GWS are far better prepared for today’s match than the corresponding fixture last year when more than half the team hadn’t played an AFL game.

“They’re much better prepared and we’ve got to be,” Sheedy said.

“Last year we walked into a match with maybe 15 or 16 who’d never played a game.”

If pre-season form is anything to go by, the Dogs could be in trouble.

WALKING WOUNDED:With skipper Matthew Boyd unavailable due to a calf injury, the Western Bulldogs received a massive boost when fellow midfielder Adam Cooney passed a fitness test following a recent knee infection. The Lions, meanwhile, will be without ruckman Matthew Leuenberger (Achilles) who won’t be risked this weekend even if he is closing on a return to senior action. Brisbane have also opted to drop Andrew Raines and Sam Docherty from the team that most recently won the NAB Cup, but former Melbourne newcomers Brent Moloney and Stefan Martin should line up for the Lions.

FORM:If pre-season form is anything to go by, the Dogs could be in trouble. The Lions head into this game having enjoyed a sterling pre-season that saw them win the NAB Cup. The team’s quality form over summer appears to be an extension of a fairly impressive second half to 2012, where they won six of their last 12 games, including the last three. And in another bad sign for the Dogs, one of those wins was a 67-point victory over the Dogs in Round 23.

As for the Bulldogs, it’s been a bit of a slog over the summer. They had first-up losses to Collingwood and Essendon in the three-way NAB Cup opening round. And, while they did manage to defeat Hawthorn by a point in an encouraging result, they followed that up by taking half a side over to Mandurah and were promptly flogged by the Dockers by over 100 points. The team’s finish to 2012 is hardly cause for optimism either as the Bulldogs lost 11 consecutive games to finish last season.

The Golden State Warriors aren’t sure if they’ll have Stephen Curry available.

It may not matter against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

With the status of their leading scorer unclear, the Warriors attempt to continue their surge by beating the Lakers for just the second time in 20 meetings Monday night.

The All-Star guard turned in his best performance of that stretch Saturday before a right ankle sprain forced him to leave in the fourth quarter of a 101-92 win over Washington. Before getting hurt in the opener of this five-game homestand, he scored 35 points with eight assists while connecting on 13 of 18 from the floor – 6 of 10 from long range.

X-rays were negative on Curry’s ankle, which he hurt on a hard foul by the Wizards’ Cartier Martin while driving toward the hoop.

“Night in and night out, he’s the best player on the floor,” coach Mark Jackson said. “It’s special to see, because when you play with players like that, it elevates everybody else and makes them believe we can win, because we’ve got the baddest dude on the floor.”

The Warriors’ struggles in the series come long before Curry joined the team in 2009. They’ve dropped 32 of 36 to the Lakers, including 15 of 18 at home after falling 118-115 in overtime on Dec. 22.

Bryant had 34 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in that meeting, and not surprisingly, he’s the driving force behind the Lakers’ dominance of the Warriors.

The superstar guard averages 30.6 points over his last 31 games against them, and 34.0 while playing in five of Los Angeles’ six-game overall winning streak in the series.

Bryant wasn’t able to keep the Lakers from blowing an 18-point second-half lead in Friday’s 103-100 home loss to Washington. He finished with 21 points and 11 assists in his return from a sprained left ankle that sidelined him for two games.

“It’s a disturbing loss and we’re upset about it,” Bryant said. “Our defensive intensity slipped a great deal in the second half and they took advantage of it.”

Coach Mike D’Antoni feels the Lakers need to stick to the game plan.

“I can’t explain it, but every time we get up 16, it’s like, ‘Well, we’re really good and we don’t have to play hard’ and we start messing with the game,” D’Antoni said. “When you start messing with not moving the ball, messing with ‘I’m just going to go one-on-one every time,’ and you start messing with the basketball gods, they will get you. If we don’t change that we obviously won’t make the playoffs.”

Los Angeles, which is opening a four-game road trip, holds a two-game edge on Utah and Dallas for the eighth and final playoff position in the West.

A healthy Pau Gasol should help. The big man had four points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes Friday after missing more than six weeks with a right foot injury.

The starting lineup of Bryant, Gasol, forward Metta World Peace, center Dwight Howard and guard Steve Nash is 0-6 this season.

The Miami Heat needed a clutch shot by LeBron James to beat the Orlando Magic earlier this month to keep their staggering winning streak going.

Injuries to the Magic’s top two scorers will likely keep that from happening this time.

James and the Heat will try to avoid some recent early struggles in order to make things easier on themselves Monday night when they face the Magic seeking a 27th straight win.

Miami (55-14) continues to close in on the Los Angeles Lakers’ record of 33 wins in a row set in 1971-72, but the streak was nearly snapped by Orlando on March 6.

James came through with a go-ahead layup with 3.2 seconds left before Arron Afflalo missed a 40-footer at the buzzer, as the Heat held on to win 97-96 at home.

They also needed some late help from James in their last visit to Orlando, as the superstar put Miami ahead for good by making two free throws in the final seconds of a 112-110 overtime win Dec. 31.

James has totaled 62 points in those two meetings, but those heroics may not be needed since the Magic are expected to be without Afflalo and Nikola Vucevic, who average 15.5 and 12.4 points, respectively.

Afflalo was lost for the season to a strained right hamstring in Friday’s 97-89 loss to Oklahoma City, while Vucevic has missed two games with a concussion.

Orlando has dropped six games in a row, yielding an average of 106.0 points.

Miami may be looking to capitalize on the short-handed Magic after needing to overcome double-digit deficits in each of the past four games.

The latest came Sunday, when the Heat were down 11 early before overpowering league-worst Charlotte 109-77. James led the way with 32 points on 11-of-14 shooting, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

“We’ve been having slow starts,” James said. “But it’s not how we start. It’s how we finish.”

The Heat were without All-Star guard Dwyane Wade on Sunday because of right knee soreness that the team deems as minor. Having him back against Orlando (18-52) would likely provide a jolt since he’s averaged 28.3 points in 31 career meetings.

Wade scored 24 points on 10 of 16 from the field in the latest matchup.

The Heat’s winning streak will be tested in this four-game road trip. After facing Orlando, they’ll visit Chicago and New Orleans before ending the swing Sunday at Western Conference-leading San Antonio.

Right now, Magic coach Jacque Vaughn is just happy that his team is showing some fight since it’s officially eliminated from playoff contention.

“It’s just an unbelievable overall effort from every guy,” Vaughn said. “As a coach you want to be proud of your team and what they’re doing. (Friday’s) effort typifies who we want to be.”

Vaughn may be specifically referring to Maurice Harkless, who had a season-high 25 points and nine rebounds while making 11 of 18 from the floor versus the Thunder.

The forward, the 15th overall selection out of St. John’s in last year’s draft, had 12 points, three boards, three steals and two blocks against the Heat on March 6.

The Memphis Grizzlies have done a great job taking care of their home court, but the road has been the problem lately.

For the Washington Wizards, home has been where they’ve enjoyed their most success.

The Grizzlies will try to avoid their first four-game skid outside Memphis in two seasons on Monday night when the Wizards – making a brief stop back in the nation’s capital – go for their first six-game run at home in six seasons.

Led by a season-high 30 points from backup guard Jerryd Bayless, Memphis (47-22) won its 10th in a row at home on Saturday, 110-106 over Boston.

The Grizzlies, though, are winless in their last three outside Memphis as they get set for games at Washington (25-44) and New York.

Memphis, which last dropped four straight away games during a six-game skid from Nov. 15-Dec. 6, 2010, had won four in a row and seven of eight on the road prior to this stretch.

Getting back into the win column might be tough as the Wizards have matched their longest home winning streak of the season and have lost just four times – by a total of 19 points – in their last 19 in the nation’s capital.

They haven’t won six straight at home since a 10-game stretch from Dec. 13, 2006-Jan. 20, 2007.

Washington will try to inch closer to that before hitting the road again to face Northwest Division-leading Oklahoma City and Orlando. The Wizards finished a 2-2 trip Saturday night with a 101-92 loss to Golden State.

“Overall, coming out of a West Coast trip at .500, for us it’s a step in the right direction,” said coach Randy Wittman, whose team had won six of eight.

John Wall had a strong trip with team highs of 20.5 points and 8.0 assists per game, but the third-year point guard needs to stay on the court, especially with backup A.J. Price (groin) out the last seven games and rookie Bradley Beal missing eight of the last 11 with a sprained left ankle.

Wall was ejected for the first time this season – and third time in his career on Saturday – following an altercation with Klay Thompson. Wall admitted he let the team down, but his focus is on Monday night.

“Just prepare ourselves for a Memphis team that’s still fighting for a better seed in the playoffs,” he said.

The Grizzlies, fifth in the Western Conference, should have Zach Randolph back in the starting lineup after coach Lionel Hollins made him come off the bench on Saturday after showing up late to a pregame shootaround. Randolph still finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Memphis, though, might have Ed Davis at center for a second straight game as Marc Gasol is listed as day-to-day with an abdominal tear suffered earlier this month.

Gasol finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and two blocks in an 85-76 home win over Washington on Feb. 1.
